i am chocolate ice cream
dan, you would be proud.
for those who don't know, my friend dan made an analogy one day during our phD tenure.
neopolitan ice cream is an analogy for the different types of people you meet. the only problem with the analogy is he screwed up what flavours were in neopolitan. here it is... let's see if i remember correctly
chocolate ice cream: represents people who are what i like to call "A-plus over-achievers"
vanilla ice cream: are the people who could be A-plus over-achievers but are laid back and don't really care enough; hence the B+ people
mint ice cream (okay, there's no mint ice cream, this is where i had to correct him and tell him it was strawberry): represents people who think they are the A-plus but aren't (i'm not so sure i have this one right)
for me, dan said, i'm really a chocolate but like to think i'm vanilla or portray that i'm vanilla. i wouldn't admit it.
the past week has made me realize that i am a chocolate. i still believe that my self-worth is built on how well i can perform to my perceived superior's standard. or maybe my standards for myself are just set very high. but i've realized that in some circumstances, no matter how hard you try, you will never be good enough. and that, is a mind-crushing blow for someone like me. and i realize. i don't want to be a man.
i just always tried to work with this belief: 'set your standards high, because otherwise, you won't reach the sky.' (poster on the wall, grade 7, st. michael's school)

Lynnie, hang in there.
First and foremost, take a breather and relax.
p.s. I am also glad that you're not a man.

At the risk of sounding overly simplistic, you have to set your own standards and not use someone else's as your guide because theirs might be based on stupid, incorrect or morally wrong measures. Same thing with goals, except sometimes you have to realize that your goals are unrealistic or need to be altered to take changing circumstances into account. There's nothing wrong with that. [Warning! Cliche alert!] I deliberately used 'goals' instead of 'standards' in that last sentence, because you should never compromise your standards in pursuit of your goals. I know that you haven't lowered your standards, but the goals that a certain someone has set for you are ridiculous.
