what's there to decide?

in grade 12, when deciding between music and science - my dad said something that rings true today,"ai yah, you are interested in too many things."

today i found myself saying something similar to a labhead. my problem is that i find so many studies in science really cool and get flustered when having to decide to work on one thing only. or i can't decide what i really want to work on until a project comes along and i instinctively say "that one".

i used to think i was decisive but these days, i second guess myself constantly. it's not good. maybe that's what happens when you hit 30. how horrible. i better get on to being 31 then.

how far into the future does one have to plan for a career in science? or can one just live in the moment? not many people here seem to understand that sometimes it takes a little bit of an out of sync work:life balance to make it to labhead. or that one can enjoy ones job so that it doesn't mean a work:life balance is a priority. strange... it didn't seem that way back home.

  • I find that scientists are required to focus more and more narrowly. It's fairly annoying, but I'm having trouble (read: failing miserably) at keeping up with the literature for my two very unrelated projects.
