sympathy for the devil

it has been an interesting two months, i'd have to say. i think i have gained an appreciation/understanding to the trials and tribulations of immigrants in a new country. no, i'm not saying that i'm acquiring citizenship to australia.

but it's interesting to note, that a phd doesn't really give you much on the skilled labour list. i'd have to get my credentials assessed as a medical scientist to give me enough points to apply.

i cannot imagine moving to a country with a language i didn't have under my belt. i am continually realizing what an amazingly brave move it must have been for my parents to jump on a plane many years ago (say about 40 years) from malaysia to canada. (yes, with nothing more than a suitcase) i have clung to internet, the phone and the realization that i can literally afford to hop on a plane and go back to canada. obviously, cost and reliability of these services have changed dramatically. boy am i spoiled. and i hope that i remember this move and what issues i had to tackle as a postdoc in a new institute when i move back to canada - because establishing yourself in a new institute in a new country, really adds a whole new dimension to the training.

okay, i have to go back to "working". mark is watching gladiator right now. now there is incentive to get some work done!
