scooter ville

so my new job (latrobe university, dept biochemistry) is about 16k away from where we live currently. here's our criteria for a new place:
1) close to melbourne uni for swimming
2) close to cheap grocery shopping (vic market, chinese grocery store)
3) along route to public transport to get to work
4) quiet

we were hoping for cheap but that doesn't exist anymore. the average price we've been forced to look at is $160 more/month than our current place. it's nuts!

anyhow, besides getting to work by public transport, i'll also be taking adv of the distance to get more time on the bike. woohoo! as we all know that cycling is my weakest sport despite the massiveness of my leg muscles compared to mark's. (i should take a picture of our legs only and post - oh, mark just said that skinny is aero... ) and then maybe run to work... and finally - MAYBE get a scooter! yes! it'll be cheaper to register (about $100/yr compared to $500/yr for a car), insure and most importantly gas!!! check out http://www.scoota.com.au/50cc.html the only problem is that i wouldn't be able to have a 2nd passenger for a while with the learner permit! guess mark will just have to keep up on the bike then! :)

  • Keeping up with you on the scooter will be good Ironman training for Mark!

Joe (the co-worker who rides a motorcycle, or used to until he hurt his back) doesn't like scooters because the upright posture on a scooter prevents the rider from using body weight to steer. But I don't know if he's spent much time riding scooters and if he's just used to the motorcycle way of things.
