More culture in Melbourne

Fashion:
PINK is definitely in. And not for girls - for guys. so Nick, you would fit in fabulously here. Although I might have to put a caveat to this statement as many of the guys wearing the pink shirts are professors in our institute.
and the women? layers. It strikes me as very european. oh... and toques here are called beanies i think.
Hair:
Punk is very much alive here with the teens as with 80's-styled haircuts (almost mullets on both men and women, in particular with the people engrossed in footy). Men seem to have this obsession with growing that small bit of hair underneath their bottom lip. This, in combination with the sideburns tends to make many of them look like porn stars.
Cars:
utility trucks which are low to the ground, dressed up and useless for their original use are VERY popular here as well. cars here tend to have an infinite lifespan due to the good weather and you can probably find cars dating back to the 70s very easily by their smell and sound. the size of the cars are similar to north america. i guess the ratio of land:population density is so great that the attitude of "the bigger the car, the better" thrives here. gas however, is hovering above the 1.10/l here.

  • What's wrong with pink? I like it, and so do the T-Mobile boys....

Tough luck about your national cycling team :-(

It's not the kind of thing you would expect to happen in Europe.

  • Does this mean that Mark is going back to his days of long hair and cowboy boots? Mark did have long hair in his youth - didn't he? - I know he had cowboy boots.

Have you gone shopping for clothes for yourself yet? Is it totally different? I assume they have some of the same brands and styles that we had in Canada. But what are the "cool" Australian shops?

  • ahh, cathy ... thanks for the reminder of my respectful adolescent years. but, i stress that NO WAY, I will not be growing a mullet, strictly on principle. i might go thom-ringer-style, and have as little body hair as possible, but that's another story. "shit kickers" though, they've never gone out of style.

and, it's quite shocking that the female mullet is very common here. it gives me nightmares, in fact.

  • what are poo-kickers? I really don't know.

  • Poor Hetti, such a sheltered existence....

  • Hetti: Hint, you might wear them at the Stampede, or to be fashionable at a downtown TO club.

  • Have you guys gotten an Oil Slick aussie jacket yet? They're amazing. I've worn the one my parents brought back for me in the Indiana monsoons, and it kept me perfectly dry. I need the matching hat though, how much for one of those. I might need to get you guys to send me one :-)

Cath might try to stop you though, she hates the jacket.

  • i have yet to see one of those oil slicker jackets... but i will keep an eye out for those. i suspect it doesn't quite fit in with the places in Melbourne we've been to so far.
