socceroos are in!

well, it seems that mark and i have arrived at a good time! we got to watch the sydney swans (afl) win the premiership (like the stanley cup) after some 30 odd years and now, we get to see the socceroos play in the world cup (really, can you be scared of a team called the socceroos?). it was a fun time watching the game in a pub with leah (harrington) and mike (tyers) who were over for a conference in melbourne.

speaking of the conference... i have to say, the canadian speakers (above + john dick) really blew away the australian scientists with their presentations!!! woohoo! and i learned i should be burying my head in old stacks of papers.. so the library it is for me this weekend.

  • imagine a gold medal for canada in hockey ... and yes, that's ice hockey ... you actually have to qualify hockey as 'ice hockey' here ... that's what it was like here the other night.

  • Hockey is forever "field hockey".

Ice hockey is played in NA and a handful of northern european countries. hockey, however, the rest of the world...

  • True, I guess I lived a sheltered (as in, sheltered from field hockey) life growing up in NA.

Oh, and is if you couldn't have guessed, the national field hockey team is called the 'hockeyroos' ...
