Half-Ironman Tassie 2007
It has been far too long since i've posted but i assure you, there are plenty of good reasons... i think.
On Jan 14th, mark and i lined up in the water at davenport, tasmania (the little island south of australia that apparently gets forgotten on maps). Well, me quite a ways back from the crowd. I swam 1.9k with some sighting and apparently i still need some help. oh well. If anyone tells you that you don't get a draft in open-water swimming... they are lying.
the bike was tough - i wasn't quite so ready for 45k of wind in my face and 4 decent hills with no ability to gear down properly. but that alright. i started the run, just as i saw mark finishing. talk about timing! the run was alright but my thighs cramped like crazy within the first km and was pretty thankful no one i knew saw me - well, that would be mark. anyhow, after 6.49, i crossed the finish line. while sitting it the recovery tent, mark realized he won his age group (it helps to get older and go into a new age group!) and finished in a time of 4.25.
he is indeed getting faster. the formula of consistency and large volume is definitely paying off for him. as for me, i've booked into doing the half-ironman in busselton may 5th. i didn't take my roll-down spot for ironman australia this year so i will have to use busselton as a "qualifier".
tassie, while a small event, was extremely well run. i always classify the organization of an event by the supplies left on the aid stations for folks like me. and there were loads left. i am sad that the tassie race is longer on due to political reasons. but nonetheless, that shouldn't stop you from visiting tassie. try not to get freaked out by the stingrays lying on the bottom of the crystal clear waters at coles bay/freycinet area. mark did.

What political reasons?
I didn't see any sting rays while in Australia but it might have been the wrong season for that.
